In film, he had roles in Shaft (2000), Super (2010), The Spectacular Now (2013), Beautiful Boy (2018), Prospect (2018), and To Leslie (2022). Royo was born in the Bronx, New York of African American and Cuban heritage. He attended Mount Saint Michael Academy in The Bronx from 1982 - 1986. Royo is married to Jane Choi and has a daughter, Stella.
